Commuting Etiquette
Here are some tips and tricks so as not to irritate your fellow passengers, keeping your commute experience peaceful and nice.
NICE AND PEACEFUL IS THE GOAL
TIP 1
R E S P E C T
Give up your seat for the elderly or the pregnant. They would have the most difficulty dealing with a crowd of people.
TIP 2
Volume, please.
It’s okay to chat and talk with your friends, just don’t talk too loudly. Some people want peace (and sleep) during their commute.
TIP 3
Extra space
Don’t put your bags on the seat beside you unless: you paid for it or there is ample space. Don’t deprive other people of seating because of your bag. It usually means that the seat is taken.
TIP 4
Squish a bit
In Jeeps, MRT/LRT and FXs: When that last unfortunate person who only has half of their bottoms on the seat rides, try to give them as much space as possible. They paid for a seat too.
TIP 5
Close your legs
Specially you, men. Don’t spread your legs so wide, it’s uncomfortable for the people beside you. You can close them a little, nothing will get damaged.
TIP 6
Your hair!
For people with long hair: Please tie them or hold them down when riding open air vehicles. We don’t want hair in our mouth and you don’t want saliva on your hair. No one wins.
TIP 7
Pass it on
When someone tries to hand over their payment towards the driver, pass it to the driver.
TIP 8
Let us pass!
When walking with friends, try not to occupy all lanes of the sidewalk.
TIP 9
Shimmy your way out
When on the bus or the mrt/lrt and you are standing, let people who want to reach the door have space to actually move towards the doors.
TIP 10
Patience, my pupil
After calling out “Para po”, wait for your ride to move towards the side before getting off or saying “para” again.
TIP 11
There’s a line!
If there’s a line, please respect it and line up as well. If there's none, then may the odds be ever in your favor.
